Biographical history
Robert Chesterman was a senior producer of CBC Vancouver radio programs, including music programs, dramas, and features. Robert Chesterman was a senior producer of CBC Vancouver radio programs, including music programs, dramas, and features. He was born in England and came to Canada in 1957. He joined the CBC as a junior producer in 1959, working in features, variety and music, and soon became the senior music producer for CBC Vancouver. He also worked in drama with Gerald Newman, the distinguished head of Vancouver CBC drama. Upon Newman's retirement in the mid-1960s, Chesterman became supervisor of CBC Vancouver radio drama and features, responsible for the arts programming issuing from the most important regional CBC production centre outside of Toronto.

The fonds consists of 524 audio tape reels, the majority of which (484 reels) contain radio programs produced by Robert Chesterman at CBC Vancouver. The remaining 40 recordings were produced by various CBC producers during the mid-to-late-1960s, and were retained by Chesterman for "historical" purposes.

This material was donated to the BC Archives by Robert Chesterman on 1987-12-16.
Arrangement
The inventory of the Chesterman tapes was originally arranged according to their CBC Vancouver tape library numbers. This numbering system approximates chronological order. The BC Archives numbering system retains this original CBC order, with the "non-Chesterman" tapes at the beginning and a series of "unnumbered" tapes at the end.

Accruals
Two further accessions were received by the BC Archives. 93-3607, received in 1998, consisted of film and video material for three films by Chesterman. 94-5991, received in 2002, comprised six audio reels for two additional radio productions. Both of these accessions were returned to Chesterman.
