Biographical history

The Saanich Prison Farm on Wilkinson Road, funded by the Attorney-General's Department, was opened September 12, 1914 [1913?] to house male prisoners doing hard labour on Vancouver Island. It operated from 1914 until 20 November 1917. In 1919, Mental Health Services assumed jurisdiction of the Saanich Prison Farm and renamed the Provincial Mental Home, Colquitz, B.C. (or Colquitz Mental Hospital). The facility was re-established as the Wilkinson Road jail (or Vancouver Island Unit) in 1964. It was expanded and updated through the years and renamed Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre.
