Alice Sinclair interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964-11-11 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Alice Sinclair recalls her family's first days in the East Kootenays; came with her family from St. Louis to Jaffray in 1906; did not start school at Jaffray until she was eight years old; East Indians at the lumber mill; Spokane Flyer; moved to Wardner in 1910; to Creston in 1912; then to Grasmere in 1923; related to Michael Phillips; she was the first homesteader in the Kootenays. Allan H. DeWolf films

The series consists of film footage shot by Allan Hatch DeWolf, mainly in the East Kootenay Region of British Columbia. Subjects include: construction and operation of B.C. Spruce Mills' 14-mile-long Moyie River flume near Lumberton, ca.1925; construction of the Mammoth Mine concentrator at Silverton; a portable McKowan Mill cutting Ponderosa pine in the Kamloops or Nelson Forest District, ca.1934; logging sled (colour); tie-cutting operation with portable mill; trucking, unloading and scaling of logs; Cranbrook Dominion Day parade, 1927; family and friends at play, etc. Also includes the four-reel title A BIG GAME HUNT IN BRITISH COLUMBIA (1926).

Forestry and mining people made up the bulk of passengers. Father ran hotel in Lardeau. Bentonite brought in from Wyoming for Duncan Dam. Pole yard in Lardeau. TRACK 2: Snow slides block rail line. A.S. Nicholson interview

The formation of Cranbrook Sash and Door Company, 1904. Sold out and returned to Ontario, 1906. Returned to B.C. in 1919. Bought some timber from H.R. MacMillan. Comments about various business deals. TRACK 2: Comments on various East Kootenay sawmills (Indistinct.) Nicholson was a timber comptroller during WW II. Business dealings (Indistinct.) Story of the formation of H.R. MacMillan Export Co., 1919. More on mills in the East Kootenays region. (Recording becomes very indistinct.)

Ben Switzer interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-05-13 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Ben Switzer recalls his early years in Arrowhead, Galena Bay and Comaplix. He journeyed from Ontario to Arrowhead in 1905, and discusses the region, the people and the town including the Kaley brothers, Ed Machechern, Harry Johnston, Russell Evans, sports days, log burling and races. He continues with recollections of Comaplix, Beaton, the Mundy Lumber Company, Bowman Lumber Company, Arrow Lumber Company, and Ludgate Lumber Company. He discusses his position as yard boss and his relations with other employees, and the East Indians. [TRACK 2: blank.]

Footage. Film proceeds from Alberta boundary at Crowsnest Pass, through Fernie, south to Waldo, then north, west and south through Cranbrook to Yahk. Includes footage of B.C. Spruce Mills Ltd. at Lumberton, Crowsnest Station, Fernie Highway, Elk River Valley, Waldo, Wardner, logged-over area in Kootenay Valley, Bull River. Shots of abandoned and ruined mills appear throughout.

This series contains correspondence and memoranda of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works with the Assistant Commissioner of Lands and Works, Nelson, regarding land disputes. File 1 contains correspondence relating to the disputed pre-emption claim of E.P. Dunn at Slocan City, 1895-1897. File 2 deals with a three-sided dispute over lands at Bonnington Falls between the City of Nelson; L.A. Campbell's application for a mill site (under the Mineral Act), and the West Kootenay Power and Light Company.

[DeWolf collection : logging flume footage]

Amateur film. Shows the operation and construction of B.C. Spruce Mills' 14-mile-long Moyie River flume. The construction scenes were probably shot during the building of a branch flume in 1926, as the Nigger Creek Crossing (which is the most impressive single engineering feature on the system) is seen completed.

Diaries and other material

The series consists of diaries of George Lovatt, kept from October 1903 to September 1905, while he lived in Sandon and worked as a sawmill operator and timber and liquor dealer. There are also diaries from his retirement in Victoria, from January 1920 to May 1924.
The series also includes account books, from 1900 to 1906, of Lovatt's son-in-law Harry Nash, who was a plumber and tinsmith and operated a hardware store in Sandon.
