History
Chief Billy Scow was born on October 15, 1902 near Kingcome River. He was the Chief of the Kwukwasutaneuk, of Gwawe Village. He was the son of Chief John Scow and Mary Hajegawugwa. As a child he attended the Powell River school for children of loggers. He was only one of two First Nations’ children who attended the school. He then attended Alert Bay School for grades four and five. His father, Chief John Scow brought him home to serve as a bookkeeper and help with the community’s activities and functions such as potlatches. He had six sons and seven daughters. His oldest son is Judge Alfred Scow. In 1953 Chief Billy Scow attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and presented her with a commemorative totem pole. He was owner and Scow Seafood Industries. He frequently served as an interpreter for the court and the Anglican School. He passed away in June 1984 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and he was buried at Alert Bay Cemetery no. 2 as noted in his death certificate: http://bit.ly/1V7BYj4.
