Extended caption on following page: The highest Totem Pole is to the memory of a rascally chief, who was out fishing one day outside Comox Harbour [and] came across a strange canoe containing eleven Indians whom he slew and brought their heads to his home, young and old, to commemorate so great a deed, after his death a pole was erected to the memory of himself, wife and daughter, dressed in their fine store clothes, and he with a carved wooden head, dangling on the strong sinew of a deer, and a flag with three streamers floating in the wind. Cakes of blackberries drying in the sun on the wooden stands in front of the view.
