Amateur film by Winston A. Shilvock

The item is a reel of amateur film made by Winstock A. Shilvock, who worked in advertising for Home Oil Distributors in the 1930's and also worked as Assistant Manager of the Pacific National Exhibition from 1939-1940. The reel contains miscellaneous footage: the opening of Vancouver International Airport (including RCMP musical ride); Home Oil gas stations; Home Gas Optimists on tour in Cariboo and in Victoria; race driver "Cannonball" Parker; logging trucks; Exhibition Park, including construction of Exhibition Gardens.

Out-takes. An Imperial Oil tribute to British Columbia on its centennial. Beginning with a visit to Major J.S. Matthews at the Vancouver City Archives, the film surveys the growth of BC industry, with special attention to the role of the petroleum industry in past development and present prosperity. Includes: Vancouver streets, airport and aerial views; heavy construction work in mountains; logging; mining; Trail smelter; fishing and canning; fruit growing in the Okanagan; cattle ranching; oil drilling (Peace River region); ships in port; sports activities; UBC.

Oak Street bridge : footage

The file consists of three reels of unedited film footage, either Kodachrome originals or a workprint. The footage documents the need for, and construction of, the Oak Street Bridge between Vancouver and Richmond. Includes sequences showing traffic problems at and around the old Lulu Island bridges (Fraser Street Bridge and Marpole Bridge); traffic to Vancouver International Airport (plus "air traffic"); Richmond Lumber Yard and rush hour traffic; horse racing at Lansdowne Park; the Peace Arch; Fraser River bridges and tugboats; opening ceremonies for the new bridge (with Premier W.A.C. Bennett and Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi); views from a tugboat towing a log boom on the Fraser River; construction, painting and finishing on the Oak Street Bridge.

Out of the shadows

Docudrama. A former alcoholic recalls his reintegration into society through the assistance of the Vancouver Harbour Light Corps of the Salvation Army. Re-enacts the man's day-to-day existence on the streets of skid row, his drinking and panhandling, and his struggle to give up alcohol and regain his self-confidence. Highlights the spiritual and material support provided by the Harbour Light mission.

[Ripple Rock project] : [footage and out-takes]

Footage. Shows various supply and construction activities associated with the project of tunneling under Seymour Narrows and placing dynamite under Ripple Rock. Includes shots of coastal features near the site, a freighter in Seymour Narrows, Painter's Lodge (Campbell River), construction of wooden frame buildings, and a sequence showing a turkey dinner being served to a work crew. No shots of the actual explosion are included. One sequence shows the freightboat "Cloverleaf IV" being loaded and en route (possibly to Ahousat, on the west coast of Vancouver Island). Unrelated material (in two segments) shows a De Havilland Comet Mk. 3 airliner with BOAC markings (registration G-ANLO) landing, taxiing, and disembarking passengers at Vancouver Airport.

Seven league boots

The item consists of a public relations film on the development of the Okanagan Helicopters Group. The release print contains BC footage includes Carl Agar flying an early helicopter; use of helicopters for aerial survey of Kildala Pass transmission line route (Kitimat project) and flying supplies to stations along the route; delivering supplies to geological surveys and drilling sites in the Rockies; topographical survey work; survey and monitoring of the Trans Mountain pipeline; re-seeding forests from the air; headquarters and hangers at Vancouver airport.

[Summer 1936: English public school boys tour; Vancouver Air Show; Lord Tweedsmuir visit]

Amateur film. 3-6 June 1936: English public school boys (mainly from Harrow) visit the Hillcrest Lumber company plant near Duncan, the Todd Fish Traps at Sooke, the dam and BC Electric powerhouse at Jordan River, and Butchart Gardens. 1 August 1936: A visit to the Vancouver Air Show, including flights to and from Vancouver; parachuting demonstrations by George Bennett of Hamilton, Ontario; shots of small aircraft, a Lockheed Electra airliner, stunting by a glider, and skywriting; an RCMP Musical Ride performance; aerial view of the "Empress of Asia"; aerial views of Victoria. 17 August 1936: The Governor-General, Lord Tweedsmuir, inspects a Guard of honour from the 16th Canadian Scottish at the Parliament Buildings.

The Fraser Valley, British Columbia

Travelogue. The Fraser Valley from White Rock to Hope, via Vancouver and the Trans-Canada Highway. Includes footage of: King George VI Highway; White Rock; Peace Arch Park; Canada customs inspection; dairy, poultry and vegetable farming; brickmaking; Stave falls power plant; the Fraser Valley Union Library; Chilliwack Cherry Carnival Parade; Chilliwack Air Show; fishing on Vedder River; Harrison Lake resort; etc. Also shows use of an Avro Anson (registration CF-EKM) to transport live baby chicks by air, and use of a Republic Seabee seaplane to fly in to Chilliwack Lake for an afternoon's fishing.

Miscellaneous subjects, including shots of downtown Vancouver streets, the Marine Building, the CPR station, a parade, and a Bristol Bitannia (a four-engined turbo-prop) airliner at Vancouver Airport. Also includes an unrelated sequence that shows hunters taking a butchered animal carcass from the back of a pack horse and loading it into a station wagon.

The item is a composite print of a promotional film made in 1947. It shows the celebrations marking Vancouver's 60th anniversary to provide a framework for a short history and description of the city. Jubilee events include parades, a pageant at Timber Bowl in Stanley Park, First Nations dancing and the induction of the Governor-General (Viscount Alexander) as an honorary Kwakiutl chief. There are historical photographs which show Vancouver's early development.
