Prior; Beacon Hill Park; Hatley Park; Fletcher Bros. music store; boxing; Gorge Sports Day; Colwood Golf Course; sulky racing, Vancouver; Butchart and other gardens; sealing fleet; panoramic views of Victoria; Legislative Buildings; Sooke pipeline; military sports day; motorcycle racing; canoe races; tug-o'-war; ship "Princess Louise"; John Oliver inspecting Navy League; visit of Gov.-Gen. The new Island Highway

The item is a composite print of a travelogue film made 1958-1959. It compares the Vancouver Island highway of before World War I with the new highway completed in 1959. The film opens with archival b&w footage of Victoria and the Malahat Drive. Modern footage shows the planning, surveying and construction of the new highway, especially the Malahat section. Some of the attractions along the new highway are also shown, including shots of scenery, resorts, fishing and petroglyphs.

Travelogue. Mainly recreational attractions of the island. Highlights Victoria and area, including view from steamship entering Inner harbour; streets and shops; Beacon Hill Park (cricket and lawn bowling); golf, riding and tennis facilities; harness racing; Thunderbird Park; Saanich peninsula farmlands; swimming at Thetis Lake. Also Island Highway and other areas, including Malahat Drive; making of Cowichan sweaters at Koksilah trading post; resort scenes at Parksville and elsewhere; Forbidden Plateau; coastal and river fishing; autumn hunting for game birds; brief logging scene. Also of interest: Friendly Cove village at Nootka Sound, and BC Provincial Police Highway Patrol.

Vancouver Island : British Columbia's island playground : 1956-1957 version

The item is a composite print of a travelogue made in 1956-1957. It is a revised version of the film and incorporates footage from the 1941-1942 and 1951 versions, as well as new footage. New footage includes cars coming off the ferry in Victoria's inner harbour; dockside scenes, including a freighter loading; a Trans-Canada Airlines aircraft arriving at Patricia Bay airport; Malahat Summit scenery; marina and fishing scenes; downtown Duncan and local logging operations; the John Hart hydro-electric plant; etc.
