Administrative history

The Victoria Short Wave Club was established in 1929 by Samuel John Lawrence. The club was created with the purpose of bringing together those with an interest in amateur radio to develop individual efficiency and to further the interest of radio in the general community. The club originally met in the rooms of the Victoria Radio Club and had planned to be affiliated with them but decided to strike out on their own. They met regularly in the homes of members until 1938 when they built a clubhouse at 2500 Foul Bay Road. This site remained headquarters until 1963. The club publishes the newsletter "Zero Beat".

Custodial history

The records were donated by David Scholes (previous secretary of the Victoria Short Wave Club) in 1990. Scholes had given the records to friend and fellow club member Robert Jewsbury to hold sometime before 1987. Jewsbury helped to facilitate the donation in 1990 and included copy negatives and prints he had of Scholes' photographs.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of the constitution, minutes and correspondence of the Victoria Short Wave Club from its earliest days in 1929 through to 1969. The fonds also includes some miscellanous material added to the records ca. 1988, an original photograph from 1937 and various negatives, copy negatives and prints which show the activities of the club.
