Alan LeMarquand interview

RECORDED: Vancouver (B.C.), [1982-05-14?] SUMMARY: Recollections of family life on B.C. whaling stations: Rose Harbour, Naden Harbour, and Kyuquot -- and later, Bay City, Washington. Father, Captain George Le Marquand, later became general manager of Consolidated Whaling Company. Some material about Consolidated Whaling Company. Biographical notes on Chinese boss Kong Sing Wing (?), as well as on fireman Mike Benson.

Arni Myrdal interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1964 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mr. Myrdal talks about his coming to Canada in 1876 from Iceland; his early memories in Iceland; the family's journey to Scotland; emigration; memories of Manitoba; North Dakota in 1880; the; family's move to BC in 1887. TRACK 2: Mr. Myrdal talks about the family's arrival in British Columbia; his father, Sigurd Myrdal, was a lay minister; the family's life in Victoria; Oliver Johnson; ;the depression of 1893; George Messer; an 1894 trip to Point Roberts; settling in Point Roberts; roads; post office; squatters; early settlers; the government military reserve.

Assorted travels

The item consists of one album containing five titled and dated sections of photographs:

  1. “A trip to the continent March-April 1900,” includes views of France and Italy. Large photographs were likely purchased during travels and include a number and the name of a photographer’s studio. There is pressed plant material “From Hadrian’s Villa” on page 3.

  2. “Port Townsend Cruise (in “Dorothy”) July 1900” includes views of various sailing vessels, many are identified.

  3. “Cruise to Nanoose Bay (in “Dorothy”), Sept 1902” includes photographs of house exteriors, sailing vessels, and unidentified women and men.

  4. “Duck shooting expedition to Douglas Lake (via Kamloops), October 1903” includes outdoor group portraits of identified men and one woman, building exteriors, and transportation by horse and boat.

  5. “A trip to Cassiar, 22nd Aug. to 2nd Oct 1904” includes views of landscapes, river boats, outdoor group portraits of partially identified men, and animal trophies. A “Memo of dates” and “Synopsis of hunting tip to Eagle River, 1904” are written on two of the pages. The collection ends with two full-page hunting photographs.

Numerous album pages are unused.

All photographs are captioned in black ink.

“(All photos (except large full plate[s]) taken with Kodak by WHL)” is written in pencil in the top left of the first album page, probably by Archives staff.

Beryl Weatherell interview

RECORDED: [location unknown], 1965-10-06 SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Mrs. Beryl Weatherell recalls early years on Saltspring Island. She discusses her family background; her father, Frank Scott, came with his brothers and settled in the Ganges area. She discusses Reverend Francis Wilson, her grandfather; fruit farming; economic life; Dr. Gerald Baker; the private school in Ganges that she attended as a student and where she was later appointed as a teacher; early residents; the Mowat family; the Woods family; farms; Saltspring Island Creamery; Black residents; and the British atmosphere. She also describes her early visits to Victoria, where as a child she watched the horses being harnessed for the fire department; a trip to the San Juan Islands, and a visit to Vancouver during World War One. Amateur film. The town of Ymir and the nearby Yankee Girl gold mine. Mining concentrator building (with aerial tramway) beside the Salmo River. Mine site, high on mountainside; buildings; small electric train of ore cars; dumping tailings on hillside; dumping ore into aerial tramway; tramway buckets descending very steep hillside to concentrator, and emptying into hopper there. B&W: interior shots (some dark): ore on conveyor belt; refining processes [cyanidation and flotation]; etc. COLOUR: bridge across river for ore cars. B&W: interior of assay office; staff with instruments, performing tests, etc. COLOUR: May Day celebrations: baseball game; rock-drilling contest; presentation of prizes; May Queen pageant and crowning; children maypole dancing.
