Biographical history

W.A.G. Young arrived in the Colony of Vancouver Island in 1857 as the secretary to the commission determining the Northwest Boundary. In 1859, he was appointed the Colonial Secretary for British Columbia and Acting Colonial Secretary for Vancouver Island. He continued in that position after the two colonies were united in 1866 and remained as Colonial Secretary until 1869 when he returned to England.

Custodial history

The fonds was acquired by the City of Victoria Archives from an unknown source at an unknown date as accession C98807-01. The fonds was held by the City of Victoria Archives as PR 175 until March 2004, when it was transferred to the BC Archives.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of invoices, receipts, agreements, correspondence and miscellaneous Colonial Secretary records created by W.A.G. Young between 1859 and 1872. All of the records, with the exception of the miscellaneous Colonial Secretary records, relate to Young's household accounts and private activities. The miscellaneous Colonial Secretary records relate to Young's activities as Colonial Secretary and include records created by the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.
