Index to maps available : Department of National Defence

Item consists of one bound atlas measuring 40.5 x 30 cm. It contains 44 index maps used for requisitioning copies of maps by the Department of National Defense. The outer front cover dates the volume to August 18, 1947. The first page of the volume is a requisition form dated June 1, 1950, for 320 copies of maps to be sent to four Canadian military units.

There are 36 coloured index maps for ordering copies in three scales: 1:25 000, 1:50 000, and 1:250 000. Maps include all of Canada, individual provinces and territories, or areas of the country (e.g., western Canada and the Arctic islands). Each map has location names and corresponding National Topographic Series (NTS) numbers listed on the back. The final eight maps, for the Department of Mines and Resources, Surveys and Engineer Branch, Hydrographic and Map Service, include index sheets for the prairie provinces; areas of Canada; 1:1 000 000 scale maps of the world; and aeronautical charts of the world and Canada.
