This series consists of declarations in support of applications for land formerly within the limits reserved for purposes of the "Sumas Dyking Act, 1878", for the years 1887-1888. Each declaration is related to one individual. Declarations would have been submitted as part of the process of applying to pre-empt land in the Sumas area.

Form 2B - Summary Convictions. This report of Summary Convictions for the judicial district of University Hill was completed quarterly (March 1962 - December 1967 and monthly (January 1968 - March 1973) by Magistrate M.E. Ferguson. Form 2B is a form generated by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics (authorized by the Statistics Act) in order to compile statistics on the number of cases terminating in a conviction, absolute discharge or conditional discharge from a summary convictions court. The form includes very detailed instructions and explanations for its completion and submission to the Dept. of the Attorney-General. About 150 offences are listed as well as possible dispositions: fine, probation, prison, or discharge (all categories subdivided "M" or "F"). Remuneration of one cent per summary conviction was paid to the person transmitting the report.

List of those fined before the Summerland Police and Small Debts Court for using domestic water outside a building for watering other than during the hours between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., August 28, 1928. The list gives names and amounts of fines, court fees, legal fees and mileage fees.

This series consists of records related to resource management created by the Sunshine Coast Forest District, part of the Vancouver Forest Region. The records date from 1984-1991.

The series currently includes on local resource use plan (LRUP) for Elphinstone. LRUPs are designed to resolve resource use conflicts in specific areas at the local level.

This series consists of a variety of records related to timber tenures created from 1966-1999 by the Sunshine Coast Forest District, a division of the Vancouver Forest Region.

The series includes the following types of timber tenures: forest licences, replaceable timber sale licences, non-replaceable timber sale licences, tree farm licences, timber licences and woodlot licences. The series includes cutting permits for the following tree farm licences: TFL 10 and TFL 39. Records regard the issuance, evaluation, administration, monitoring, planning, replacement, cancellation, deletion and extension of these timber tenures.

The records may include legal documents, operations information, development plans, correspondence, forms, applications, Forest Service memos, approval letters, reports, maps, licences, permits, photos, and charts.

The series also includes fish and forestry guidelines for major licensees and small business licence holders. these are in the form of assessment action plans and CFFG audit records.

The records were classified as 19500-45, 19580-45, 19600-30, 19600-45, 19600-55, 19620-25, 19700-45, 19720-20, 19720-45, 19720-55, 19910-20 and 19910-30 in the Forest Operational Records Classification System (ORCS).

This series consists of tree farm licence (TFL) forest development plans and management plans created from 1968-1999 by the Sunshine Coast Forest District. TFLs are a type of timber tenure which grants a virtually exclusive right to harvest timber and manage forests in a specified area. They are issued for a term of 25 years, but can be replaced every 5-10 years.

These files document the management of TFL numbers 10, 39 and 43. Over the years, TFL boundaries and rights holders may have changed. TFL holders are required to submit a management plan every five years to the Chief Forester (RSBC 1996, c. 157, s. 35, and BC Reg. 23/2013).

These records include draft and final management or development plans; revisions or amendments to existing plans; correspondence between the ministry and licence holders, as well as correspondence with ministry staff; records related to public review of the development plans; consultation and correspondence with impacted First Nations; reasons for why a plan or amendment was or was not approved; advertisements in newspapers and the Gazette; and maps and map overlays.

The records have been classified as 19710-20 and 19710-55 in the Forestry Operational Classification System (ORCS).

This series consists of correspondence of the Superannuation Commissioner relating to municipal superannuation, civil service superannuation and teachers' pensions, 1946-1950.

The series consists of correspondence, minutes of meetings, reports, briefs, memoranda, etc. created by the Superintendent of Education. The records include those relating to the B.C. Teachers' Federation, 1963-1967; the B.C. Education Conferences, 1955-1960; the Provincial Board of Examiners, 1968; and the Langara College Campus, 1967.

GR-0450 consists of letterbook copies of correspondence outward from Superintendents John Jessop (1872-1878), C.C. McKenzie (1878-1884), S.D. Pope (1884-1899), Alexander Robinson (1899-1919) and S.J. Willis (1919-1946). The letterbooks document the multifarious duties of the Superintendents of Education, who were responsible for the administration and overall management of the provincial public school system. The first seven years of correspondence may have been written in the Superintendent's capacity as Chairman of the Board of Education.

Due to its artifactual value, only volume 1 was retained after microfilming.

Indexes to correspondence outward are included in this unit. However, the indexes have certain characteristics and idiosyncracies which researchers should note before consulting the records. No index exists to correspondence outward for 1872 and most of 1873. Correspondence outward for the period December 1873 - March 1881 is indexed in the letterbooks for those years (vols. 2-5). Another overlapping index for the period 1878-1881 will be found in vols. 192 and 193.

A more comprehensive system of indexing commenced in April 1881 and continued on through December 1905. Correspondence outward for this period was indexed in separately bound volumes (vols. 194-207). In 1906 the bound volumes were replaced by boxed index cards. GR-0450 includes index cards up to and including 1915. Regrettably, cards for the years 1916-1919 have not survived and, as a result, vols. 148-191 are not indexed.

Researchers should also be aware of the indexing methods used in the Education Office over time:

1. Correspondence outward, Pre-1901 (Vols. 2-5; 192-205)
   Correspondence outward, 1873-1900, was indexed alphabetically, by name of recipient. For example: correspondence concerning a school would be addressed to the secretary of the local board of school trustees; it was then indexed under the name of the secretary, not under the name of the school or school district. Researchers will need to know the names of school board secretaries in order to search the indexes for documents pertaining to a particular school. The best way of identifying these officials is to consult the Annual Reports of the Public Schools. In the appendices of the Reports researchers will find an alphabetical list of public schools, showing the names of local school trustees and indicating which of the trustees had been designated secretary.

2. Correspondence outward, 1901-1913 (Index vols. 206-207; Index card boxes 208-212)
   Beginning January 1901, correspondence outward was indexed alphabetically, by name of school or school district. Between 1906 and 1913 special index headings were reserved for correspondence with the Department of Public Works (re: the construction and maintenance of school buildings) and with provincial School Inspectors.

3. Correspondence outward, 1914-1915 (Card Index Boxes 213-216)
   Outgoing correspondence was divided into four broad categories: General, Cities, Municipalities, and Rurals. Within each category, correspondence was indexed alphabetically. "General" correspondence includes routing circulars, acknowledgements of petitions for schools, replies to applications for teaching appointments, etc. In the "General" category special index headings were also reserved for correspondence relating to school gardens (Agriculture), school law (Attorney-General), Cadet Corps, Finance, the Free Text-Book Branch, Provincial Normal Schools, Public Works Depts., School Inspectors, Technical Education and U.B.C. Under "Cities" will be found correspondence relating to Graded City Schools; under "Municipalities," correspondence pertaining to Rural Municipality Schools. "Rurals" describes correspondence concerning the small Rural and Assisted Schools in the province.

To determine the status of a particular school i.e. whether it was classified as a graded city school, a municipal school, etc., consult the published Annual Reports of the Public Schools.

GR-0449 consists of indexes to correspondence inward of superintendents C.C. McKenzie (1878-1884), S.D. Pope (1884-1899) and Alexander Robinson (1899-1919). The actual correspondence - or at least those documents which have survived - is to be found in GR-1445.

Contemporary indexes to correspondence inward from 1872 (when the position of superintendent was established) to 1877 were lost or destroyed sometime before 1936, when the superintendents' records were transferred to the Provincial Archives. The index to correspondence inward, 1878 - March 1881 is to be found in GR-0450, vols. 192 and 193 [B08624].

The indexes which comprise this unit begin in April 1881 and continue on through December 1915. The indexes consist of two types - bound index volumes and boxed index cards. Three methods of organization were used over time as the records were created. They are as follows:

1. Index volumes 1-12 (1881-1900)
   Correspondence received prior to 1901 was indexed by name of correspondent, not by subject. For example, correspondence concerning the schools of VANCOUVER, 1886, does not appear under the heading "Vancouver" in the index (GR-0449, Vol. 3); rather, it is indexed under the name of Dr. D.L. BECKINGSALE, Secretary of the Vancouver Board of School Trustees.

Secretaries of local school boards were responsible for official communications between school districts and the Education Office in Victoria. Thus, researchers will need to know the name of the school board secretary in order to search the index volumes for documents pertaining to a particular school. The best way of identifying these officials is to consult the Annual Reports of the Public Schools. In the appendices of the published Reports researchers will find an alphabetical list of public schools, showing the names of local trustees and indicating which of the trustees had been designated secretary.

2. Index volumes 13 & 14 (1901-1905); Index card boxes 15-19 (1906-1913)
   As a rule, indexes to correspondence inward after 1901 are arranged alphabetically, by name of school or school district. Thus, correspondence and reports concerning schools in Vancouver will be indexed under the letter "V". Correspondence unrelated to a particular school is indexed under the name of the correspondent.

3. Index card boxes 20-23 (1914-1915)
   Incoming correspondence was divided into four broad categories: General, Municipalities, Cities, and Rurals. Within each category, correspondence was indexed alphabetically.

"General" correspondence includes routine administrative letters, applications for appointments, general enquiries, etc. However, the "General" category also includes special index headings for correspondence re: Cadet Corps, Free Text-book Branch, School Inspectors, Technical Education, University of British Columbia, and the like.

Under "Cities" will be found correspondence relating to Graded City Schools; under "Municipalities" correspondence pertaining to Rural Municipality Schools. "Rurals" embraces correspondence dealing with the small Rural and Assisted Schools in the province. Researchers who are uncertain of the status of a particular school - i.e. whether it was classified as a graded city school, a municipal school, etc. - should consult the published Annual Reports of the Public Schools before searching these indexes.

Consists of correspondence inward to Superintendents John Jessop (1872-1878), C.C. McKenzie (1878-1884), and S.D. Pope (1884-1899). Types of records include petitions for school buildings, applications for teaching posts, minutes of local school boards, school trustees' reports, etc. This series may be used in conjunction with GR-0449 (Superintendent of Education, Indexes to Correspondence Inward, 1881-1915) and GR-0450 (Superintendent of Education, Correspondence Outward, 1872-1919).

Researchers should also be aware of the Correspondence Inward files of the Provincial Secretary, 1871-1892 (GR-0526). Since the Provincial Secretary was responsible for the Education Department, these files contain many records pertaining to teachers, schools, and education matters in general. Access to documents in GR-0526 is through GR-0524 (Provincial Secretary. Registers and indexes of letters inward, 1872-1924). Documents pertaining to education, etc. are indexed under the headings "SCHOOLS", and "EDUCATION, SUPERINTENDENT".

The series consists of records created by the Superintendent of the Provincial Police between 1892 and 1918.
Records include miscellaneous correspondence, reports, publications and blank forms sent to the Superintendent. There is also a single report from 1942.

BC Provincial Police Superintendent's letter-book containing one letter only, dated February 12, 1915.

The series consists of miscellaneous notes, memos, and correspondence created by the Superintendent of Provincial Police between 1900-1916.

The series consists of the correspondence of Colin S. Campbell, Superintendent of Provincial Police in Victoria from March 1911 to August 1912. The files are arranged chronologically and contain letters inward to Campbell from Inspector Thomas Smith on the mainland, and include carbon copies of Campbell's replies. There are also a few letters written by Campbell when he was an inspector in 1911, to Superintendent F.S. Hussey.

The correspondence deals with complaints against police constables, equipment, condition of lock-ups and jails throughout the province, inspection of hotels and other administrative matters.

The series consists of Superintendent of Police correspondence inward from 1891 to 1910. The correspondence is generally filed chronologically and alphabetically by sender's name.

With the exception of certain files in 1896 and 1897, the correspondence from 1891 to 1900 is organized by date and then by letter of the alphabet. From 1901 to 1910 the correspondence is organized by alphabet ranges, and then by varying date ranges, e.g. Jan 1901-Mar 1903 for Aa-Bx but Jan 1901-Sep 1902 for Caa-Cz. Correspondence for a particular time period is therefore also not sequential. A single year or date range is distributed over several different boxes, depending on the name of the correspondent. Date ranges are not exact, i.e. files may contain earlier correspondence than indicated if it is part of an ongoing issue. The letter ranges are guides only and do not necessarily reflect the exact contents of a file, e.g. Com-Cz may contain correspondents ranging from Cotton to Cutter only.

The series consists of correspondence inward to Superintendent of Police between 1923 and 1929. The records are in numbered subject files which are arranged in numerical order. The subject files have the same numbers as those in the previous correspondence series, GR-0057.

The series consists of four volumes of correspondence inward to Superintendent of Police, from July 1891 to 1910. Letters are filed alphabetically by sender within chronological periods: 1895-1900, 1900-1906, 1906-1908, 1908-1909, 1909-1910.

The series consists of correspondence from the Dept. of the Attorney-General to the Superintendent of Police between October 1898 and August 1912.

The series consists of correspondence inward to Superintendent of Provincial Police from May 1910 to August 1912.

The records are filed chronologically within the following categories:

1. General, from government departments (1907-1912) (Volumes 1 to 4)
2. Wanted or missing (Volume 5)
3. District: Atlin, Hazelton, Skeena, Boundary, Cariboo, Hazelton, Kamloops, Kootenay west, east, southeast, and northeast, Nanaimo Comox, West coast, Vancouver, Vancouver Westminster, Victoria and Yale (Volumes 6 to 31).

The series consists of correspondence inward to the Superintendent of Police between 1912 and 1922. The records are numbered subject files which are arranged in numerical order. The series includes "aliens and enemies" files; "Form A" files in boxes 14 - 20 contain the names of enemy aliens who were required to register and report to the Provincial Police, but remained "on parole" within the community. They also include the names of enemy aliens who were already imprisoned in local jails. Other correspondence deals with issues such as bigamy, seduction, illegal sale of liquor, prostitution, burglary, sudden or mysterious deaths, gambling, arson, and escaped prisoners. During this period, the police also conducted searches for individuals reported missing by overseas family members. Such letters were usually written when an emigrant family member had fallen out of contact with his or her relatives in their home country, and are not indicative of foul play.

The series consists of 12 volumes of correspondence from the Superintendent of Provincial Police outward to Attorney General. The records were created between December 1898 and April 1918 and are letterpress copies. There are subject indexes at the start of each volume.
